Quick answer: The four components that determine whether a retractable screen still runs cleanly after five years are the motor, the fabric, the side guides, and the coating. Rinova screens use an A-OK 12 V DC solar tubular motor (20 Nm, 5,200 mAh battery, ~40 cycles per charge), Serge Ferrari Soltis 7635 glass-fibre fabric (515 g/m², 5 % openness), patented Plastex CLIPzip® side guides tested to 130 km/h (81 mph), and TIGER Drylac® super-durable powder coating on a Qualicoat-certified line.
Search for retractable patio screens in Orange County and you will read the same four phrases on every site: “weather-resistant fabric,” “durable aluminum,” “heavy-duty motor,” “premium quality.” None of those are specifications. They are adjectives.
That matters because a retractable ZIP screen is not a single product — it is four components bolted together, and the cheapest one determines how long the whole assembly lasts. A premium motor behind polyester fabric still gives you a rippled, sagging screen in four summers. Excellent fabric in a cheap side track still gets torn out in the first serious Santa Ana wind event.
So here is the full component list for the screens we install, with manufacturer, model number, and measured value. If you are comparing quotes, ask the other bidder for the same four lines. The answer you get — or do not get — is informative.
A 45 mm tubular motor running on 12 V DC with its own integrated battery and solar panel. There is no line-voltage connection anywhere in the assembly.
Why DC instead of 120 V: a low-voltage DC motor is meaningfully quieter than a line-voltage drive, and more importantly it removes the electrician entirely. No conduit, no wall switch, no trenching across a finished patio, and in most Orange County jurisdictions no electrical permit.
Electronic end stops. On cheaper screens the travel limits are mechanical — physical stops that are bolted into position at installation. They drift. Six months later the screen stops an inch short, then two inches. Electronic limits are programmed into the motor, so the screen lands on the same point on run one and run four thousand.
Obstacle detection. If the bottom bar meets resistance on the way down — a patio chair, a planter, a dog, a child — the motor stops. This protects the fabric and the mechanism, but the reason it matters most is the third category.
20 Nm of torque. This is the number people skip, and it is the one that decides whether a 16-foot screen judders on start-up. The fabric weighs 515 g/m² — heavy for its class. A 10 Nm motor will move it; a 20 Nm motor moves it without straining, which is the difference between a mechanism that lasts five years and one that lasts fifteen.
The integrated 5,200 mAh lithium-ion battery delivers roughly 40 open/close cycles per full charge. The 18 V / 5 W panel (model AC605-03) recharges it continuously.
The honest arithmetic: at two to four cycles a day — which is heavy residential use — the panel keeps the battery permanently topped up and you will never think about it. Charging from completely empty takes about eight sunny days. If a screen sits in deep shade for a long stretch, or a house is vacant through winter, there is an optional plug-in charger (12.6 V / 1.0 A) that fills it in a few hours.

This is the component where the money actually goes, and where the difference between a good screen and a bad one is most visible after year three.
A ZIP screen holds its fabric under permanent tension — that is the entire point of the system, and it is what keeps the screen flat and quiet in wind. But permanent tension is exactly what polyester cannot handle. Polyester yarn creeps under sustained load, and it creeps faster when damp. After a few seasons the fabric has physically grown, and a screen that is longer than its opening ripples.
Soltis 7635 has a core of glass fibre — 42 % glass fibre to 58 % PVC. Glass is a mineral yarn: it does not elongate under load and it does not shrink when wet. The fabric you install is dimensionally the same fabric ten years later. This is the single most important reason we do not sell a polyester screen at any price.
The secondary benefit is fire performance. Glass fibre is non-combustible, which is why this fabric carries B1 (DIN 4102-1), M1 (NF P 92-507), Classe 1 (UNI 9177) and Euroclass C-s3,d0 classifications. That is at the heavy end of the exterior screen category. Lightweight screens flutter and drum in wind; heavy fabric hangs still. It also runs more quietly in the tracks. If you have ever sat under a patio screen that snapped and popped every time the breeze picked up, that was a light fabric.
Openness factor is the percentage of the fabric surface that is open weave. At 5 %, you keep a usable view out during daylight, outsiders cannot see in, and glare drops sharply. Go more open (10 %, 14 %) and you get a clearer view but noticeably more heat and glare. Go fully closed and you have a solid wall, not a screen.
Five percent is the balance point most Southern California patios want.
This is the question we get most often, and it is genuinely a performance decision, not an aesthetic one.

Grigio blocks roughly 96 % of heat gain. It absorbs rather than reflects, which means minimal glare and the clearest view through the fabric. If your problem is a west-facing patio that becomes unusable from 3 p.m. onward, this is the correct answer.
Bianco reflects 63 % of solar energy straight back and lets 24.7 % of daylight through. The room behind it stays brighter, and because it reflects rather than absorbs, the fabric itself runs cooler to the touch.
The shorthand: grey for shade and view, white for brightness. Soltis 7635 is dyed on both sides, and beyond our two stock colours there are more than 20 two-tone combinations available on request.
Ask any screen installer what actually fails in the field and you will not hear “the motor burned out.” You will hear that the fabric got pulled out of the side track in a wind event.
That is the failure CLIPzip® exists to prevent. The fabric edge carries a zip; patented clips inside the aluminium track engage behind that zip. For the fabric to escape, the clips have to fail mechanically — wind pressure alone will not lift it out.
Tested to 130 km/h (81 mph) gusts, and warranted by Plastex at that figure. For reference, Santa Ana wind events in Orange County commonly produce 40–60 mph gusts, with the strongest canyon and foothill events reaching 70–80 mph.
The detail installers care about: the tracks are pre-drilled on a 100 mm grid, and the clip position is set during installation rather than fixed at the factory. That means the screen can be tensioned to the actual opening, crease-free, regardless of manufacturing tolerance — and it can be readjusted years later without ordering new parts.
Temperature range −25 °C to +85 °C (−13 °F to 185 °F). Thermoplastic that goes brittle in cold or soft in heat is a real failure mode. An anthracite track on a south-facing wall in Riverside County in August gets genuinely hot. Also certified to 4,000 hours UV and fire class UL94 V2, with a thermal expansion coefficient of 0.00007 mm/mm °C.
Ten-year manufacturer warranty from Plastex on the CLIPzip® system — double the warranty on the fabric.
Powder coating is where corners get cut invisibly, because a bad coat and a good coat look identical on delivery day. The difference shows up in year three, on the south elevation, as chalking and fade.
Super-durable rather than standard polyester. Standard architectural powder is formulated for a normal facade. Super-durable formulations hold colour and gloss substantially longer under high UV load and in salt air — which describes both Newport Beach and the inland valleys, for different reasons.
Qualicoat-certified line, including pre-treatment. This is the part worth understanding: adhesion is decided by what happens to the aluminium before the powder is applied. Degreasing, etching, chromate or chrome-free conversion. A premium powder over lazy pre-treatment will still delaminate. Qualicoat certification audits the entire line, not just the powder.
Colour matching. Standard colours are Anthracite RAL 7016 and White RAL 9010 — the identical frame colours used on our Terra and Venta pergolas, coated on the same line. There is no colour drift between pergola and screen, which is a common and very visible problem when the two components are sourced from different suppliers.
Beyond the stock colours, the TIGER chart offers four finishes — Smooth Glossy, Smooth Matte, Fine Texture Matte, Metallic Fine Texture Matte — across roughly 32 shades, at a 5 % surcharge.
The fabric, the side guides, and the coating are identical on both versions. The only difference is how the screen moves.

Choose manual if the screen is on a side you adjust once a season, or if you are covering several bays and want to control cost. Nothing electronic means nothing electronic to service.
Choose solar for the side you actually operate daily — usually the west or south exposure. A screen you have to walk over and crank is a screen you stop using by August. At a $200 delta per bay, motorization on the working side is the better spend.

Five years on materials and workmanship from Rinova. Underneath that, Serge Ferrari warrants the fabric for 5 years and Plastex warrants the CLIPzip® system for 10.
What is not covered, on any fabric shading system from any manufacturer: damage from extreme weather events, improper installation, and mechanical force. Retract the screen when a storm is forecast. A ZIP screen is engineered to 81 mph and it will hold — but there is no reason to test it.
Because there is no cabling to run, solar screens can be added to a pergola you already own. Set the cassette, screw on the side tracks, aim the panel at the sun. End stops and the remote are paired at the factory.

Bianco (RAL 9003) reflects 63 % back and transmits 24.7 % of daylight for a brighter interior, and the fabric heats up less. Grey for shade and view, white for brightness.
The Plastex CLIPzip® side guide is tested for gusts up to 130 km/h (81 mph). The clips engage behind the zip inside the track, so the fabric cannot be pulled out — the most common form of damage on retractable screens. Even so, retract the screen when a storm is forecast.
It is a 12 V DC tubular motor rather than a line-voltage drive, and therefore considerably quieter. The thermoplastic of the CLIPzip® guide additionally damps sliding noise, and at 515 g/m² the fabric flutters noticeably less than lightweight screens.

The PVC surface barely picks up dirt. A damp cloth and mild detergent are enough; the fabric does not need to be unhooked or washed. The powder-coated aluminium profiles need no painting or oiling.
Yes. No cabling has to be run, so solar screens can be retrofitted to an existing Terra or Venta at any time. They are coated in the same TIGER Drylac colours as the pergola (RAL 7016, RAL 9010), so no colour mismatch arises.
